Description

The Purple Pixie® Loropetalum from the Southern Living Plant Collection is a Loropetalum like no other—a compact, colorful, and elegantly weeping variety that turns any garden into a vibrant work of art. This dwarf Loropetalum boasts rich, eggplant-purple foliage that remains evergreen throughout the year, creating a constant backdrop of color and texture. Its distinctive, cascading form sets it apart, making Purple Pixie Loropetalum one of the most eye-catching weeping Loropetalum varieties available today.

In the landscape, it forms a soft, mounded silhouette that naturally draws the eye. Used in containers, hanging baskets, or window boxes, its graceful branches spill dramatically over the edges—transforming ordinary spaces into lush, colorful displays. The dense, elliptical leaves shimmer in shades of plum and burgundy, offering year-round interest and contrast in garden beds, borders, or decorative pots.

Come spring, Loropetalum Purple Pixie truly dazzles with brilliant pink blooms—the signature Chinese fringe flowers—that burst across the foliage in a spectacular display. These bright, ribbon-like flowers appear heavily in spring, then return in smaller flushes throughout summer and fall, ensuring color nearly all year long.

Growing just 1–2 feet tall and spreading 4–5 feet wide, the Pixie Loropetalum is perfect as a vibrant groundcover, slope planting, or colorful accent beneath taller shrubs. It’s also a standout among evergreen container plants, offering both structure and motion in patio planters or raised beds. Naturally deer-resistant and low-maintenance, Purple Pixie Loropetalum is a landscape designer’s dream—easy to grow, endlessly versatile, and guaranteed to bring rich, dramatic color to any garden setting.

Purple Pixie Loropetalum Care

  • Hardy from USDA Zones 7-10. We do recommend providing winter precautions during hard freezes in the first growing season, i.e. cover with freeze-cloth or a tarp overnight.
  • Prefers Partial to Full Sun. However, gardeners in the deep south of the United States should try to shield the Purple Pixie Loropetalum from intense afternoon sunlight.
  • Grows best in rich, slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Loropetalums may experience root rot when planted in soil with poor drainage.
  • Water 3-4 times per week during the first growing season to help the Purple Pixie grow extensive roots and improve its chances of long-term success. During the second growing season, supplementary water 2-3 times per week is generally sufficient.
  • Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, in early spring to promote growth and the overall health of your plant.

Companion Plants:

  • This selection's bold evergreen color creates a fantastic contrast with many many different types of plants. It pairs well with almost any type of Gardenia, thanks to their bright white flowers and the fact that they grow well in similar conditions.
  • Try planting it with some brilliantly colored evergreens, such as the Lemon Lime Nandina or the Sunshine Ligustrum. Either of these will contrast beautifully with the rich purple leaves of the Pixie.

Planting tips for Acid Loving Plants

Care & Use

Purple Pixie® Loropetalum thrives in full sun to part shade, developing its richest purple tones with plenty of light. However, gardeners in the deep south of the United States should try to shield the Purple Pixie Loropetalum from intense afternoon sunlight. It is hardy from USDA Zones 7-10. We recommend taking winter precautions during hard freezes in the first growing season, i.e., cover with freeze-cloth or a tarp overnight.

This compact dwarf loropetalum adapts beautifully to various soil types, performing best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. If your native soil is heavy or clay-based, amend it with pine bark or compost to improve aeration and drainage, which is especially important when planting on slopes or in containers.

During the first growing season, keep the soil consistently moist to help the roots establish a strong foundation. Once mature, this Pixie Loropetalum is remarkably low-maintenance and tolerant of brief dry spells, making it an ideal choice for gardeners who want lasting color without constant upkeep.

A light application of an acid-forming, slow-release fertilizer in early spring helps maintain vibrant foliage and encourages steady growth.

Pruning needs are minimal — simply trim back after the main bloom if you wish to refine its cascading shape. Because it naturally grows in a softly trailing form, Purple Pixie Loropetalum brings elegance without effort. Its deep purple foliage pairs beautifully with silver, chartreuse, or variegated companions, and its bright pink Chinese fringe flowers provide a pop of color that harmonizes with everything from spring pastels to autumn golds.

Spacing Recommendations

Purple Pixie Loropetalum Spacing Requirements

When planting Purple Pixie® Loropetalum in the landscape, give each shrub enough room to let its cascading form shine. For a lush, continuous carpet of color, space plants 3 to 4 feet apart (center to center) so the foliage fills in seamlessly as they mature. If you’re using this dwarf loropetalum as an accent or in mixed borders, allow 4 to 5 feet of spacing to highlight its naturally graceful, weeping shape.

In containers or hanging planters, make sure there’s at least 2 feet of open space around the plant’s base so the branches can spill elegantly over the edges. At full maturity, Loropetalum Purple Pixie typically reaches 1 to 2 feet tall and spreads 4 to 5 feet wide, forming a softly draping mound of evergreen color. Proper spacing allows air circulation, encourages even growth, and lets every plant display its rich purple foliage and bright Chinese fringe flowers to full effect.

Whether cascading from a stone wall, defining a border, or anchoring a container garden, Purple Pixie Loropetalum rewards thoughtful placement with texture, movement, and lasting beauty season after season.
